The Kleine Humboldt Galerie invites you to a tour of contemporary art & literature in the HU main building.

Even more than his older brother Wilhelm, after all Prussia’s most powerful functionary in the field, Alexander von Humboldt stands for a romatic notion of the scholar – one that is driven by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and embarked on a perpetual journey into the still Unknown.
If the journey – in the form of the grand tour – had its fixed place in upper-class educations of the static 19th century, then what can travel teach us in a world that is already in constant flux itself? The two upcoming events at the Kleine Humboldt Galerie, both entitled FIELD TRIP, will address themselves to this question.

The first of the two, Field Trip #1 / If I go, there will be trouble… will try to approach the question by going on a journey itself. The different parts of the exhibition are scattered throughout the premises of the HU’s main building Unter den Linden. A guided tour by artist Yorgos Sapountzis will take visitors by the hand between individual stops.
Uniting the individual contributions is a shared interest in kinds of movement and travel that are less linear than the grand tour. The interest lies with travelers whose impulses are located somewhere between wanderlust and homesickness, whose “troubles” occur in decisions as fundamental as the one between getting up or staying-in-bed for another five minutes.

The second event will be an exhibition in December 2010.
